Ukrainian and a Jew. But
the Jews can leave the
Soviet Union, so there is
jealousy, anger, rage and
resentment against Jews."
Cardin, past president of
the Council of Jewish Fed-
erations, has made five trips
to the Soviet Union in the
last 12 months. She said the
Soviet Jews have changed
their attitude in that time.
"They now see that there is
no future for Jews in the
Soviet Union," she said.
A man she met who recent-
ly graduated first in his
technology school class ap-
plied for a position at a
major factory. After being
forced to take a lower posi-
tion, Cardin said, the man
discovered a woman who
graduated last in his class
was given the job. "He went
home and told his wife that
day that they must apply for
an invitation to Israel,"
Cardin said.
Four hundred thousand
Soviet Jews have Israeli in-
vitations and 1 million
Soviet Jews have applied for
the invitations. "But once
you apply for an invitation,
you give up your status as a
Soviet citizen," Cardin said.
"And then, to buy anything,
you must prove your status."
For a Soviet Jew waiting to
go to Israel, this means
standing in lines for hours
with other Soviets, waiting
to buy potatoes or other
staples that sell out in 45
minutes and then having to
prove your residency status
with an exit visa when mak-
ing the purchase.
Cardin said world Jewry
must help individual Soviet
Jews "from the minute they
apply to leave . . . The
miracle is they are com-
ing —over 10,000 last month
and we are expecting 15,000
in June, July and August
and for as long as the Soviets
keep the door open."
The world is watching the
Operation Exodus cam-
paign, Cardin said. It will
have a bearing on Eastern
European countries which

are considering flying
charter flights of Soviet
Jews to Israel. Cardin had a
private meeting Tuesday
with the president of
Hungary to discuss resump-
tion of charter flights
through Budapest.
"We are the most affluent
generation in the history of
our people," Cardin said.
"We are the most blessed
and we can change our des-
tiny by adding 1 million
Jews to the land of Israel.
This (Operation Exodus
campaign) is not 'business as
usual.' "
Cardin was followed by
Operation Exodus local
chairman David Mondry,
who compared the exodus of
Soviet Jews to the plight of
European Jews during the
Holocaust. "Fifty-five years
ago we failed," Mondry said.
"But today we won't fail.
This (Soviet Jewish exodus)
is the number one priority of
Jews today."
Mondry lambasted Jews
who have commented to
him," 'I don't like Shamir.'
`I don't like Peres.' I don't
like Israel's Shas Party.' I
don't like Israel's Orthodox.'
Well I don't like them
either," Mondry said, "but
what does that have to do
with Soviet Jews?
"I want my grandchildren
to be able to say, 'My bubbie
and zayde responded.' "
The meeting at the Bor-
mans' brought the Opera-
tion Exodus total for Detroit
to $12.9 million. Detroit's
goal is $16.5 million as part
of the national goal of $420
million. ❑
