"28111 TELEGRAPH AT 12 MILE & 1-696 SOUTHFIELD 355-1000 E Jews have lived in Carpen- tras since the first century of the Common Era and were known as "the pope's own Jews" because of the pon- tifical protection they en- joyed in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. Today, there are about 80 Jewish families left in the village. Most of the 260 Jew- ish residents are newcomers from North Africa. `This is a cemetery of those long deprived of their rights," Joseph Sitruk, the chief Rabbi of France told compatriots gathered to pro- test the cemetery attack in Carpentras. "We should remember France's three basic rights: first, liberty, which exists; second, equal- ity, which is frequently ne- glected; third, fraternity, which is often forgotten. Let us not forget." ❑ Top Issues Continued from Page 6 B A Deep tint, 3.1 ER V-S, auto., CL trim, AM/FM r.-s., pwr. wind. and tools, cruise control, remote sport mirrors, front and m floor mats, 2 tone paint and more. WAS FACTORY REBATE THIS WEEK ONLY desecrated cemeteries and in one instance played hide- and-seek among the gravestones with cemetery guards. In France, only hours before Monday's massive march, another 32 tomb- stones were desecrated in the Jewish cemetery in Clichy, a northern suburb of Paris. Anti-Semitic slogans were painted in red on graves and cemetery walls. Six headstones were painted with Nazi emblems. Police said they have no leads to who was responsible for the acts. The first of the string of at- tacks was discovered on May 10 when two Jewish women ran shrieking from the an- cient Carpentras cemetery. The women, visiting the graves of family members, found headstones overturn- ed and the naked corpse of a recently buried 81-year-old man impaled on the handle of a beach umbrella. Bet- ween his open legs lay a stone Star of Davis hacked off another monument. On his chest was a large stone plaque, deposited there as if to prevent the dead man from rising. Four young skinheads . E abuse as well as highly com- plex bio-ethical questions will also become an integral part of the interreligious agenda. 3. Religious pluralism will be severely tested but great- ly enlarged in the 1990s, as Moslems (America's fastest growing religious group), Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Confucianists and Shintoists rapidly increase in number due to high birth rates and large scale immigration to the United States. Such cities as Los Angeles already reflect the growing number of new participants demanding seats at the American interreligious table. Many people who define the United States as either a "Christian" or a "Judeo- Christian" nation will have to confront the new demo- graphic reality that is dra- matically changing the re- ligious makeup of America. In addition, the black churches, already the train- ing ground for many of America's black political leaders, will increase in both size and importance in the 1990s. They will press their concerns with a vigor and strength not seen in the past. For Jews, it will mean an even more crowded "public dais." The traditional tri- partite arrangement of Jew- Catholic-Protestant (usually all white) will be sharply challenged by other re- ligious groups in the 1990s. 4. The growing shortage of priests and nuns in the Roman Catholic Church will bring about a series of significant changes in- cluding "priestless" worship services. Married men will be permitted to carry out an increasing number of ritual duties just short of celebrating Mass and hear- ing confessions. To meet the shortage, many of the new Catholic priests serving in the United _ States during the 1990s will come from Central and South America, as well as Asia. These new and younger priests will no
