BERKLEY TOURS & TRAVEL INC. presents ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER'S PHANTOM OF THE OPERA-TORONTO CHICAGO MEMORIAL WEEK-END very good relations with their non-Jewish neighbors. Church groups often visit the synagogue; the Masons and the Girl Scouts have come to Seders; and Kass has been a guest speaker at Flagler Col- lege, where a course in Old Testament is offered. Like the city itself, this con- gregation has quite a history. Though it can't claim to be the oldest in the nation, or even in Florida, it is believed to be the third oldest in the state — after Pensacola and Jacksonville. The earliest Jewish settlers were Eastern European im- migrants who found their way to this small town near Jacksonville in varied — and sometimes unexpected ways. Jacob Tarlinsky, the founder of the congregation, came to St. Augustine for health reasons. Kass' own father came because he liked this quiet town in north- eastern Florida better than other cities in Florida. After living in Jacksonville. Kass' father thought he'd prefer the south. But when he got to Miami, he headed right back up north. Others came to help make a minyan. At the time, in the late 1800s, there were just eight Jewish men living in St. Augustine. "Somebody told those men about two Jews in Fernandina," says Kass," and they sent for them — got them places to stay, even found jobs for them — so they'd have a minyan. And that's how my father-in-law got to St. Augustine." In time, Snyder became not only a loyal member of the congregation but a successful cattleman and organizer of the Florida Cattlemen's Association. By 1898, the Jewish residents were praying regularly in Jacob Tarlinsky's house on Bridge Street. And by 1923, they had built their synagogue — the same one the members still use today. But there have been changes since the early days. The congregation, once Or- thodox, is now Conservative. Three years ago, the members had a new addition built to the synagogue. Kass points out the kosher kitchen, the classrooms for Hebrew school, and the social hall where the Friday evening Oneg Shabbat is held. Iburists are always welcome to join in, says Kass. "We just love St. Augustine," Kass says. "It's a good place to raise a Jewish family. In fact, it's a good place for everything." ❑ Ruth Rovner is a freelance writer in Philadelphia. • BUS MAY 1547, 2527; JUNE 1-3, &10,1517, 22.24, 29-1 AND WEEKENDS AND MIDWEEK PACKAGES THROUGH OCT. 1990 PHILADELPHIA, ATLANTIC CITY, NEW YORK CITY, LANCASTER, PA.
