him what it meant to him to
be Arabic. I could never
answer the question the way
he did, but I saw how much
knowledge he has and that he
has been able to make a dif-
ference in the Arabic com-
munity. He said that some
people label him a "trouble-
maker" but that to me is a
good - thing because it means
people are listening to him
and that his voice means
something. My family has
achieved a lot of success be-
cause they believe in them-
selves and they take a stand
on issues that mean some-
thing. That's the way I want
to be. All of this contributed
to the choices I have made for
my future.
I plan to attend Adrian Col-
lege for four years in the pre-
law program and then go to
the University of Michigan
Law School. I know that I can
achieve my goals and be suc-
cessful on my own terms by
working up to my potential
and most importantly, by
believing in myself. This
brings me to another member
of my family, my cousin Alli.
He went from having vir-
tually nothing to being an
honor student and receiving
a full scholarship to
Georgetown Law School. He
is a role model for me.
Whenever I start to doubt
that my future is secure, I
start to think of three words
that he said to me. He said,
"It's out there," and whenever
I start to think it's not going
to happen I remember him
and his words and it gives me
back my confidence. That's
another thing that being
Arabic means to me; having
faith in my own ability.
I think everyone should ex-
perience the feeling of family
that I do when I am with my
Arabic side. Most of my
friends can't understand why
I look so forward to going to
family gatherings. They have
never felt the way I do when
my family is all together, (not
to mention, they make the
best food!)
Last month my Sito (grand-
mother) turned 75. She has so
much to be proud of with the
children she has raised and
the children they've raised.
With a fire chief, a deputy
sheriff, a politician, a teacher,
and a principal, she can be
proud of her entire family and
we can be proud of her.
In answering the question
of what it means to me to be
of Arabic descent I have to go
back to the way I felt when
my uncle told me of my grand-
father. I got chills up and
down my spine and had a
deep desire to make him
proud of me. ❑
