CONTEMPORARY ment establishing policies for guests wanting to deliver the ceremonial opening prayer. Sorotzkin, 39, an Orthodox rebbetzin and mother of 13 children, had been recom- mended to deliver the prayer by Sen. Orrin Hatch (R- Utah), who was described as a friend of the Sorotozkin family. But Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.V.), who as president pro tempore of the Senate oversees the selection pro- cess, decided Tuesday night that Sorotzkin was un- qualified to deliver the prayer because of the 1977 document. John Stait, who is assis- tant to the Senate chaplain, the Rev. Richard Halverson, said that when Sorotzkin showed up on Wednesday and was told she could not deliver the prayer, she was "gracious about the whole thing." Stait said Halverson was unaware of that 1977 criteria. In her resume, ob- tained from Hatch aides, Sorotzkin calls herself "Rabbanit Rachel Sorot- zkin." "Rabbanit" is the Hebrew word meaning rabbi's wife. Stait said the word "rabbanit" confused Halver- son. In addition, it was difficult "working with a Mormon senator who knew a lot less than we did about the Jewish religion," Stait added. Sorotzkin, who lives in Kiryat Telshe-Stone with her husband, Moshe, and their 13 children, is a native of the Bronx, N.Y. Her father, Rabbi Yitzchok Isaac Liebes, is head of the court of the Rabbinical Alliance of America. Ceremony In West Bank Jerusalem (JTA) — A vociferous public dedication of a Torah scroll at a yeshiva in the West Bank city of Nablus passed without inci- dent last week. The Israel Defense Force clamped a daylong curfew on the 120,000 Palestinians in Nablus and three adjacent refugee camps, to prevent any clashes from occurring while 150 Orthodox Jews and many right-wing mem- bers of parliament attended the religious ceremony. The Torah was dedicated at the Od Yosef Hai ("Joseph Still Lives") Yeshiva, which is at the site of Joseph's Tomb, a shrine holy to Moslems and Jews alike. • furniture • lighting • wall decor • gifts • silk florals • interiors G raduate to the finest in home furnishings, gifts and accessories casual living modes The under "umbrella chandei true ambiance of Bistro-Lighti dining area.
