David Harris, Washington
representative of the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee, re-
ported Sunday by telephone
from Moscow that "nothing
happened yesterday, to the
best of anyone's knowledge.
There were no reports of any
incidents."
Harris is one of three
AJCommittee officials in
Moscow to conduct a nation-
) al survey of attitudes among
Soviet Jews and non-Jews
about Jewish identity, cul-
ture and religion.
On Sunday, Harris met
with Jewish activists from
Moscow, Leningrad, Minsk,
Sverdlovsk, Tbilisi and other
cities. None of them reported
disturbances in their respec-
tive cities.
Meanwhile, in Warsaw,
Poland, Dr. Shimon
Samuels, European director
of the Los Angeles-based
Simon Wiesenthal Center,
expressed to Polish officials
deep concern over anti-
Semitic violence at a folk
festival in the Polish city of
Kielce in April.
Samuels protested how of-
ficials handled the April 29
assault by right-wing thugs
at a klezmer music concert
by a Jewish folk-music group
from Vinnitsa in the
Ukraine. A gas grenade was
thrown into the theater, in-
juring two people, and the
band's car was smashed.
No arrests were made and
local law-enforcement offi-
cials took no action to find
the perpetrators.
Samuels said the incident
was "particularly disturbing
in light of Kielce's history as
the site of Poland's bloodiest
post-war pogrom" —a refer-
ence to the 42 Jewish Holo-
caust survivors from Kielce
who returned there only to
be massacred on July 4,
1946. They were killed by a
crowd of local extremists
spurred by rumors of blood
libel, a medieval slur claim-
ing Jews murdered Chris-
tians for their blccd.
The lurking menace of at-
tacks on Jews in Soviet
Russia, whether real or em-
broidered to induce panic,
has given rise to contingency
planning.
The Jewish Agency for
Israel is looking into setting
up a possible safe haven for
Jews in Soviet Georgia, ac-
cording to a report in the
Jerusalem Post.
