Accused Nazi
Awaiting Trial
Bonn (JTA) — No date has
been set for the trial of
accused Nazi war criminal
Josef Schwammberger, who
was extradited from Argen-
tina May 2.
The 78-year-old former
Waffen SS officer, held
responsible for the murder of
at least 5,000 Jews, landed
in Frankfurt from Buenos
Aires under escort the next
day.
He was immediately flown
to a prison in Stuttgart, the
city where his arrest and
extradition were originally
requested in 1973.
Schwammberger will be
tried in a Stuttgart court,
unless he is declared medi-
cally unfit.
His extradition ends a
three-year legal battle that
began in November 1987,
when he was arrested in
Argentina's rural Cordoba
province.
The former commandant of
the Przemysl and Mielec
concentration camps in
Poland fought extradition.
But he was stripped of his
Argentine citizenship, and
in March the Argentine
Supreme Court upheld West
Germany's extradition re-
quest.
He has now been handed
over to German authorities
in Buenos Aires.

Israel Orchestra
Tour Is Success
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Israel Philharmonic Or-
chestra's first concert tour of
the Soviet Union was a re-
sounding success, according
to reports reaching here.
After performing in
Moscow and Riga under the
baton of Zubin Mehta, the
ensemble wound up its tour
before a standing-room-only
audience in Leningrad May
2.
The internationally
famous Israeli-born
violinist, Itzhak Perlman,
played Tchaikovsky's violin
concerto in the same concert
hall where the great Russian
composer conducted its first
performance exactly 150
years ago.
Mehta, the IPO's conduc-
tor and musical director, ad-
dressed the audience in Rus-
sian, after three encores
ended the concert.
He told them the IPO tour
was an important link in the
cultural ties being forged
between Israel and the
Soviet Union.
