Theological Seminary
Honors Local Leaders

Several leaders in the
Detroit area will be honored
by The Jewish Theological
Seminary of America at
6 p.m. June 5 at the annual
community-wide awards din-
ner at Adat Shalom
Synagogue.
Herman and Pauline Can-
ner, Milton Gilman, Rabbi
Benjamin Gorrelick, Leon
and Hilda Lucas and Norbert
and Marianne Reinstein will
be presented with the
Seminary's Second Century
Award "for their dedicated
service to the community in
advancing the religious and
cultural traditions of Conser-
vative Judaism."
Herman and Pauline Can-
ner have been involved in the
activities of Adat Shalom
Synagogue. Canner's com-
munal activities include
member of the President's
Council, General Motors In-
titute, Masons and Ameri-
In Jewish Congress. Mrs.

Soviet Jews
To Lead Parade

Fifty-one children and
young men who have had a
brit milah will be honored at
the Lag B'Omer parade 2 p.m.
May 13 at the Jewish Com-
munity Center in West
Bloomfield. Rabbi Shaiall
Zachariash, who supervises
every brit, and the physicians
who donate their services, Dr.
Jacobs, Kroll and Tawil also
will be honored. Sinai
Hospital will be cited for
making available its facilities
free of charge. Each child will
receive a gift of a bicycle.
Dr. Semion Meerkov, pro-
fessor of engineering at the
University of Michigan, will
speak in both Russian and
English. The parade will then
begin, being led by the new
immigrants. The parade will
feature floats, clowns, and the
white Heather Highlanders
and Midnight Riders mar-
ching bands.
Following the parade, Josh
Laufer of Ann Arbor will
entertain with a Lag B'Omer
program of music, song and
narration. Entertainment
also will be provided by
Jonathan Haglund, a juggler,
fire eater and magician. This
free program, open to
everyone, is sponsored by
Lubavitch Foundation and
the Jewish Community
Center.

member of the Alumni
Association at Wayne State
University.
Gilman, a member of Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek, is
president of Alloy Metals In-
ternational. His activities in-
clude board member of Israel
Bonds, member of the Prime
Minister's Club, Israel Bonds;
built the Chabad House in
Ann Arbor, founder and
patron of the Simon Wiesen-
thal Holocaust Center in
California, and a member of
the board of directors of the
Weizmann Institute.
Rabbi Gorrelick is the reci-
pient of the Seminary's Rab-
bi Max Arzt Award. Since his
ordination at the Seminary in
1933, Rabbi Gorrelick has
served as a rabbi and is
presently Rabbi Emeritus of
Congregation Beth Achim.
Rabbi Gorrelick served as a
United States Military
Chaplain during World War
II. For 57 years Rabbi Gor-
relick has devoted time to
Jewish studies and Jewish
religious activities in
metropolitan Detroit.

Hilda and Leon Lucas have
been involved in Congrega-
tion Beth Shalom since its
founding. Lucas served as
educational director for
several years and Hilda Lucas
has served as chairperson of
the Youth Commission and on
the Sisterhood Board. Lucas
became associated with
Wayne State University and
served as professor in charge
of the clinical social work pro-
gram until his retirement in
1985. Hilda Lucas returned to
work as a clinical social
worker in the Jewish Family
Service and the Oak Park
schools until her retirement
in 1977.
Reinstein was president of
Congregation B'nai Moshe
from 1962 through 1964 and
served the congregation in
numerous capacities. He is
past treasurer, United
Hebrew Schools and present-
ly serves on the agency's ad-
visory board. Marianne
Reinstein is past vice presi-
dent and program chairper-
son for B'nai Moshe
Sisterhood, and a founding
member of its choral group.
Her communal activities in-
clude being honored as 1987
"Woman of Achievement" by
the Women's League, Michi-
gan Branch.

Home For Aged
Elects David Hermelin

David Hermelin will be
nominated and elected to
serve as 1990-91 president of
the Jewish Home for Aged at
the Home's annual meeting
7:30 p.m. May 14 at
Fleischman Residence/Blum-
berg Plaza. Nominated to
serve as officers with
Hermelin will be Marvin
Goldman, Michael B.
Perlman and Jack Schon, vice
presidents; Michael Kramer,

honored by nomination to
Life Member status on the
Board. Board members Paul
Borman, Richard Burstein,
Daniel Clark, Nancy Jacob-
son, Michael Kramer, Stanley
Levy, Irving Nusbaum,
Michael Perlman, Gerald
Rosenbloom, I. William
Sherr, and Jonathan Stein-
berg will be nominated to
serve another three-year
term.
Hermelin served as interna-
tional chairman of the State
of Israel Bonds Campaign,
1988 general chairman of
United Jewish Appeal of
Metropolitan Detroit and
chairman of the American
ORT Federation.
The Jewish Home for Aged
annual meeting is open to the
community. Raj M. Wiener,
director of the Michigan
Department of Public Health
will be the speaker. For infor-

Jack Robinson has been
named associate chairman of
United Jewish Charities in-
vestment committee and
Robert Slatkin chairman of
the UJC's Agency Endow-
ment Committee.
Robinson was chairman of
the 1984 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, a vice president of the
Jewish Welfare Federation
and immediate past chair-
man of its Committee on In-
dependent Appeals. He is a
member of Federation's ex-
ecutive committee.
The investment committee
is charged with monitoring
the investments of the UJC.
Slatkin is a former presi-
dent of the Jewish Commuini-
ty Center. Past president of
the Young Adult Division of
Federation; he is a recipient
of both the 1972 Boesky and
the 1978 Wetsman Young
Leadership Awards. Slatkin is
a former co-chairman of
Hadracha.
The Agency Endowment
Committee enables the com-
munity's service agencies to
identify, train and solicit
potential sponsor consti-
tuents to provide funding for
programs not supported by
regular operating budgets.
