Proposed Sale
Upsets Israel
Jerusalem (JPFS) . Israeli
senior officials are upset
about what has been termed
an American arms-selling
binge to Arab states.
According to U.S. reports,
the Bush administration is
considering military sales
worth $8.8 billion worth of
sales to three Persian Gulf
states plus another $4.4
billion to Egypt.
The arms sales to Arab
states is part of a $30 billion
package the Bush ad-
ministration has notified
Congress it intends to sell
over the next year, as super-
powers accelerate sales to
keep their respective defense
industries going in.the post-
Cold War period. Senior offi-
cials in the Prime Minister's
Office termed the U.S. inten-
tions "appalling." Final
decisions on how to respond
are said to be held up due to
the absence of a fully func-
tioning defense minister.
Dore Gold of Tel Aviv Uni-
versity's Jaffee Center for
Strategic Studies said the
intended U.S. sale
"indicates the same level of
quality systems that are sold
to Israel will be sold
throughout the Arab world."
Since the White House
proposal is only a declara-
tion of intent and not a final
sale, some officials hope the
United States will ultimate-
ly not sell all the items
which it informed Congress
about.
Objections to the sale are
more related to the quantity
of the sale rather than to
specific components. "The
first time they looked at the
list a couple of months ago,
people were looking at the
parts, but now they are look-
ing at the aggregate and
they are concerned," one
source said.
The intended U.S. arms
sale would provide Saudi
Arabia with $4.4 billion in
aid, $2.4 billion to the
United Emirates and $2
billion to Kuwait.
While the concern is over
the quantity, experts say
there is at least one major
element of the proposed
sale that is of particular
concern: the proposed arms
sale includes selling multi-
ple launch rocket system
(MLRS) to Saudi Arabia and
Kuwait, $500 million and
$240 million, respectively.
MLRS is a sophisticated
mobile artillery system
designed for area-wide bom-
bardment of massed forma-
tions, superior to other
systems both in firepower,
range, mobility, and speed.
