Diplomat
To Get Honor

Washington (JTA) — Mor-
ton Abramowitz, the U.S.
ambassador to Turkey, will
soon be promoted to the rank
of "career ambassador," the
State Department's
equivalent of a five-star gen-
eral.
The rank, to be conferred
at a State Department
ceremony later this month,
is awarded "in recognition of
especially distinguished ser-
vice over a sustained
period."
Just 10 other foreign ser-
vice officers have obtained
that rank, first awarded in
December 1981.
They include Deputy Sec-
retary of State Lawrence
Eagleburger, U.N. Ambas-
sador Thomas Pickering,
and Richard Murphy, a
former assistant secretary.
