traded by Palestinian Arabs
in the Sinai border towns of
Rafiah and El-Arish.
There, Palestinians come
from Israel and the West
Bank with suitcases full of
products, soap, food, cooking
oil, fresh fruit and vegetables,
to sell to the local popula-
tion. As long as these traders
work in a relatively in-
conspicuous way and don't
bring in truckloads of goods,
the sympathetic Egyptian im-
port officials close their eyes
to it.
When asked why they
engage in the trading of
Israeli-made products, one
fledgling Palestinian en-
trepreneur remarked: "It's a
good livelihood. There is a
great demand for these pro-
ducts amongst the local
population so why shouldn't
we be allowed to satisfy it?" ❑
