you keep cool and save
energy at the same time.
Your air conditioner is a big energy
user. Set the thermostat on your air
conditioner to 78 degrees, instead of
72, and you may cut your electricity
use almost in half.
Installing an old fashioned ceiling fan
will help circulate the cold air from your
air conditioner. Even when used alone,
ceiling fans use no more energy than
a 15 watt light bulb, and can reduce
room temperature by 10 to 12 degrees.
Sunlight streaming into a room can
create a lot of heat. On summer days,
lower the shades, close the blinds, and
draw the drapes to protect windows
from the sun. Installing shutters or awn-
ings also helps.
Avoid, if you can, installing a room
air conditioner in a window that gets
lots of sun; it makes the air conditioner
work harder and wastes electricity. If
you have a choice, put the unit on the
north or east side of the house, or in
a shady location.
The single most important factor in
keeping cool and saving energy, ac-
cording to the National Energy Watch,
is to make sure you have an efficient
unit that is the correct size for the area
you're cooling.
Room air conditioners are labeled
with an Energy Efficiency Rating
(EER). This tells you how efficient the
unit is, and how much it will cost to run
it for one year, as well as comparing
