the renovated room is like a breath of
fresh air. The architect raised the ceil-
ing and designed a functional and at-
tractive white tile and formica window
seat to hide the radiators.
To the right of the room are an Eliel
Saarinen pedestal table and chairs,
which were recovered in hot pink silk.
An old Mexican stacking chest houses
cook books and clutter. In the seating
area to the left, the iron lounge chairs
are slipcovered in a preshrunk
washable white duck fabric. A plaster
pedestal table and floral area rug com-
plete the setting.
On the chair is a whimsical pillow
that the designer credits for giving her
a direction for the house. "Our client
selected the pillow at the design
center," Vesely explains. "It gave me
a focus and I decided to keep things
lighthearted and colorful."
The ceiling fan adds just the right
touch to the charming, inviting room.
While the designer kept the brick
floor in the den, the walls caused a bit
of a dilemma. Vesely explains, "The
owner took apart a barn to get the
wood to cover these walls and insisted
they stay. We added moldings and
eight coats of white paint for an in-
teresting look."
On the wall is a splended oil by
Israeli artist Itsak Tarkay. Antique jugs
rest on the top of the entertainment
center. Surrounding the Spanish wood
and formica game table are wood and
iron chairs redone in printed snow
leopard hides.
The existing sectional was recovered
in a deep geranium color. The barrel
chair and throw pillows are a
Brunswick and Fils tulip print on linen.
In a basket next to the sectional sits the
owner's collection of rocks and stones.
"We travel frequently," she says. "I
picked each one of these from our
vacation spots."
An old iron and leather folding
bench sits nearby. "The owner loves
ottomans and stools and benches,"
Vesely says. "She has them all over the
house."
Two stately clocks hang valiantly on
the side wall. "One was from the
