adds Joe Garvey, "You could use
these buildings as passive solar collec-
tors" with the addition of certain
features like brick, stone or quarry tile
paving.
Because a good solarium or conser-
vatory is a precision-engineered
building, great care is demanded in
construction. Since many dealers do
not provide installation, homeowners
must often choose between contracted
work and their own labor, sup-
plemented by dealers' advice.
Unskilled installation leads to most
of the problems experienced by
solarium and conservatory owners, ac-
cording to Joe Garvey. "They leak

you're building with wood; you can't

For homeowners who want to install
their own glass addition, companies
such as Machin Conservatories and
Four Seasons Greenhouses provide
advice and assistance. If the finished
product shows defects, the dealer may
come out and point out mistakes.
Despite the similarities in construc-
tion principles between solaria and
conservatories, the two structures do
have distinct differences. Generally, the
former are simple and modern in
design, usually built as a lean-to
against the house. The more elaborate,
often Victorian-style conservatories, on
the other hand, are frequently free-
standing with minimal links, and
sometimes completely detached from
the main structure.
