The
we stand at the crossroads of one of
the most historic chapters in modern
Jewish history: the exodus of hundreds
of thousands of Jews from the Soviet
Union and their return to the People
Israel.

Moscow, January 27, 1990 — The sign translates
"Zionism is a danger to everyone." Recently,
The New York Times reported... "more than 50
desecrations of Jewish cemeteries, some 1,000
anti-Semitic rallies, and vitriolic hate leaflets in
the thousands distributed everywhere."
The Soviet Union is granting exit visas to nearly
all who request them. But getting out of the
country is another story. There are no direct
flights to Israel, so frantic refugees must find
their way to the few East European transit points.
Because of Arab terrorist threats, there is
uncertainty whether these transit points will
remain open.
A long journey is over—and a new life begins. Israel
took in 1,500 Soviet Jews the first two days of April
alone. The summer months could bring even greater
numbers because many Soviet Jewish families
planned their emigration so their children would not
miss school.
