of labor of France brought of-
ficial greetings and par-
ticipated in all activities.
In 1992, the world will
remember the Spanish In-
quisition 500 years earlier. In
that black period in Spain's
history, the Jews and the
Moors were driven from
Spain, murdered or forced to
convert to Christianity. For
hundreds of years, the Jews
had lived in peace with their
neighbors, the Moors, and
contributed to the education,
culture and economy of the
country until 1492. Prior to
the Inquisition, 1 million
Jews lived in Spain.
Today, an estimated 25,000
Jews live in Spain. Only since
the demise of Franco has the
population increased, with
many Jews coming to Spain
from Argentina and other
South American countries,
from Morocco and from Israel.
The memorial to the 7,000
Jewish Civil War volunteers
will be there for all to see
when millions of people come
to Barcelona in 1992 for the
Summer Olympics, as well as
to remember the terror of the
Inquisition. ❑

White House
Worries About
Israel's Capital

Washington (JTA) - The
Bush administration has
warned that House passage
of a resolution declaring
Jerusalem as Israel's capital
could have "unintended con-
sequences."
White House spokesman
Marlin Fitzwater made the
statement when asked if the
April 24 vote, 378 to 34,
could make it more difficult
to gain the release of the
seven remaining U.S.
hostages in Lebanon.
"The Congress needs to
consider these resolutions
more seriously than they
have in the past," Fitzwater
said. "They can have
unintended consequences."
In Lebanon, Hussein
Mousawi, a top official in the
Hezbollah, the Party of God
fundamentalist group which
holds some of the hostages,
said, "The American deci-
sion declaring Jerusalem a
capital of Israel will com-
plicate the issues of hostages
. . . I expect the kidnappers
not to release any more
hostages."
Ruth Yaron, spokeswoman
for the Israeli Embassy, had
no immediate reaction to
Fitzwater's statement. "This
is an internal American af-
fair that we would not be
commenting on," she said.
