volunteers who fought
Franco and fascism in
Spain during the Civil War
were officially recognized on
March 25, 1990. Three hun-
dred persons from 14 nations
gathered in a heavy
downpour on Mont Juich, The
Jewish Mount, in Barcelona
for the dedication of the
monument to the Jewish
volunteers who comprised 20
percent of the 35,000 Inter-
national Brigades from 53 na-
tions. Many thousands lie
buried in Spain.
The monument recognizes
Jewish fighters in Spain who
were the precursors of the 1.5
million Jews who fought to
resist Nazism and fascism
during World War II. Among
the survivors were those who
participated in the resistance
in the Warsaw Ghetto and
who escaped from the death
camps.
The dedication was a mov-
ing experience for the
volunteers, the wives,
husbands, children, grand-
children and the friends of

Bobbi Graff, a resident of
Southfield, visited Barcelona
in March for the dedication of
a monument to 7,000 Jewish
volunteers in the Spanish
Civil War

the living and deceased
brigaders.
Speakers addressing the
ceremony were Monsieur Le
Maire of Barcelona; Dov
Liebermann of Belgium, a
volunteer and the driving
force behind the project for
the monument; and the rab-
bi of the Barcelona
Synagogue. Greetings were
delivered by brigaders from
several countries. The cantor
led the chant for the dead,
and ceremonies were finaliz-
ed with songs of the Interna-
tional Brigades.
On Friday evening, the
mayor and municipality of
Barcelona hosted an official
reception at City Hall for all
the participants. Saturday, a
service and luncheon in
honor of the occasion was
held at the Barcelona
Synagogue.
Those in attendance
representedthe full spectrum
of professional and political
thinking — from left to far
right. Some had written
books on Spain and their per-
sonal experiences; others had
written on history and
philosophy. Professors,
teachers, physicians and
nurses were among those pre-
sent, as well as artists, musi-
cians and actors.
The Simon Wiesenthal
Center was represented by its
European director, Shimon
Samuels. The former minister
