Tel Aviv (JTA) — Private
donations financed a flight
that landed 190 Soviet Jew-
ish immigrants in Israel on
April 18, and hopes were ex-
pressed that it will set a
trend.
Normally, the immigrants'
air passage is paid for by the
Jewish Agency for Israel.
The new arrivals were
funded by donations to the
Swiss-based International
Fund for Medical Education
and Development, which
raised $250,000 for the pur-
pose.
Shlomo Hillel, chairman of
Keren Hayesod, described
the operation as an example
of the civilized world's will-
ingness to support a human-
itarian cause.
Keren Hayesod is the
worldwide philanthropy
which raises funds for Israel
and other Jewish needs, ex-
cept in the United States,
where the philanthropic
agency is the United Jewish
Appeal.
Hillel predicted that pri-
vate contributions soon
would be financing more
Soviet immigrant flights.
The Jewish Agency re-
ported meanwhile that 810
Jewish immigrants from
Argentina arrived in Israel
during the last three months
and another 300 Argentine
families registered for im-
migration.
According to Uri Gordon,
head of the Agency's Im-
migration Department,
Argentine Jews are worried
about that country's bleak
economic situation.

Population Up
2.2 Percent

Tel Aviv (JTA) - Boosted by
an upsurge in immigration,
Israel's Jewish population
grew by 2.2 percent in the
past year, compared to 1.2
percent the year before, ac-
cording to figures released
by the Central Bureau of
Statistics.
Overall population growth
was 2.4 percent.
As Israel observed its 42nd
anniversary of independence
April 30, the country's Jew-
ish population is put at
3,755,000, out of a total
population of 4.6 million.
Jews comprise 81.6 per-
cent of the population. Some
665,000 Moslems account for
14.5 percent.
The 107,000 Christians
make up 2.3 percent.
