Report: France Deported Jewish Kids In WWII Paris (JTA) - An incident in which Vichy, France police officials during World War II deported Jewish chil- dren above and beyond Nazi requests was reported last weekend by the French news magazine L'Express. Although the episode, which resulted in the deaths of thousands, was one of the most repugnant examples of Nazi collaboration by Fren- chmen during the war, not one of the officials has been brought to justice, the mass- circulation news weekly re- ported. It began when French police arrested 3,500 Jewish children in July 1942 on orders of the Vichy govern- ment. The Nazis had asked only for the detention of adults over 16. But the Vichy police also rounded up children under 16, and as young as 6 months. The children were confined with their mothers in two concentration camps that were built and run by the French inside France, while Vichy waited for further in- structions from the Ger- mans, L'Express reported. Louis Darquier de Pellepoix, at the time in charge of Jewish affairs in Vichy, suggested that the children be placed in special homes in France. But Police Chief Jean Leguay and his immediate superior, Rene Bosquet, urged the Germans to take them as deportees. While waiting for the Gestapo to decide, the two French police officials hand- ed over the children's mothers to be deported. The youngsters were left practically unattended while Berlin took its time. Two weeks later, on July 31, the Gestapo acceded to the Fren- ch request. The children were placed on special trains to Auschwitz. Fewer than a dozen are known to have survived. According to the report, Leguay was the police offi- cial who initially urged the Gestapo to deport the chil- dren. He was never tried for war crimes and died an old man at his home in Paris last year. Bosquet, who is still alive, served post-war French governments for 24 years before retiring to go into business. He held top exec- utive posts at several major corporations. Although several com- plaints have been filed against him for wartime col- laboration, the attorney general's office still has not completed its investigation nearly 50 years after the events, L'Express said. The magazine stressed that no Frenchman has ever been indicted, much less tried for collaboration with the Nazis. Although much was made of the life sentence imposed on the former Lyon Gestapo chief Klaus Barbie in 1988 for crimes against human- ity, Barbie was, after all, a German, L'Express pointed out. France simply does not want to open the closet in which so many of its own skeletons hang, the news weekly concluded. Israelis Being Tried For California Murders Tel Aviv (JTA) — Two Israeli nationals whose extradition is barred by law will be tried in Israel for crimes they allegedly com- mitted in the United States. Yair Orr, 30, and Nadav Nakan, 33, both Israel Defense Force combat veter- ans, were recently indicted in Tel Aviv District Court on charges of murder and con- spiracy to commit murder. They are accused of murdering a couple in Santa Barbara, Calif., on Oct. 5, 1987. The prosecution will pre- sent 18 witnesses from the United States. They will be accompanied by Santa Bar- bara Chief Prosecutor Tom Sneddon, who was in Israel last week helping the local prosecution prepare the case. According to the indict- ment, Orr, who was unemployed at the time, and a friend, Charles Le Gros, with whom he lived, con- spired to murder Le Gros' in- laws, Carmen and Jack Hively, for an unspecified amount of money. Nakan is alleged to have joined the conspiracy in June 1987, when he arrived in California.
