In an editorial entitled
"Slouching in Jerusalem,"
the New York Times berated
Israel's government for
covertly funding the pur-
chase of a building in the
Christian sector of
Jerusalem's Old City for use
by Jewish settlers.
Not only, said the Times,
did use of government funds
"probably" break Israeli
law. Not only did the silence
of Israel's Prime Minister
and Housing Minister about
the secret deal "violate a
simple sense of truthfulness.
Not only did this behavior do
"great damage to Israel's
standing in the United
States." But, scolded the
Times, Israel's government
has "defiled Israel's
unblemished record of sup-
port for freedom of worship
in the Old City. They owe
church leaders, and Israelis,
an apology." ❑
