Did two-time Pulitzer

William Safire:
A "10."

rates reporters and colum-

nists and tallies the 10 best
stories and columns in five
different categories.
Among its many conclu-
sions:
• A "10 Best' column was
Safire's Jan. 2 piece on Ger-
mans aiding Libya build a
nerve gas plant. The column,
says the Media Guide,
"became the talk of Ger-
many." His emotionally
charged reference to a 'Final
Solution' and 'good Ger-
mans' and 'Auschwitz in the
sand' set off fireworks in
Bonn and prodded the Ger-
mans into confessing that

something was indeed
amiss."
• Friedman's May 7 New
York Times Magazine article
on Israeli policies in the
West Bank was one of the 10
best foreign dispatches of the
year. Central to Israel's
presence in the West Bank,
wrote Friedman, was the
question, "What kind of
nation do we want to be?" - a
query that Israelis have
been "dodging" because
"they don't like the choices
they have!:
The Guide also awarded
Friedman three-and-a-half
stars (out of a possible four)
for work as the Times' cur-
rent State Department cor-
respondent. In this post,
"Friedman is able to draw
on particularly deep insights
and experiences to enhance
his already significant
reporting and analytical
abilities."
• Commentary editor
Norman Podhoretz wrote
one of that magazine's "most
provocative" 1989 essays,
"Israel: A Lamentation
From the Future." Appear-
ing in March, the essay
discussed Israel's "historical
threat" from Palestinians,
Arabs and the PLO, and
"the erosion of support and
defense of Israel from within
the Jewish community
itself."
"Podhoretz's essay didn't
move policy," concludes the
Media Guide, "but his la-
ment helped keep the debate
going on Israel's policy and
on U.S. policy toward
Israel."
• One star went to Wash-
ington Post columnist
Stephen Rosenfeld because
"he retreated to safe, famil-
iar ground, advancing the
foreign policy views of the
liberal establishment, the
conventional and the predic-
