"Robert Friedman's book describes
the growth of a movement which
spits on democracy, reviles the
secular Jew, borrows the language
and tactics of the Munich beer hall,
and elevates the Fiihrer principle
while boasting of an addiction to
war, expulsion, and triumphalism."

For Emigres
New York (JTA) — Seek-
ing to introduce recent
Soviet Jewish immigrants to
Reform Judaism, the Union
of American Hebrew Con-
gregations has re-issued a
booklet describing a model
Friday night service in Heb-
rew, English and Russian.
The 63-page publication,
first published 10 years ago,
includes a candle-lighting
ceremony and explains that
the service need not include
a minyan or a rabbi.
The model service is
adapted from the Union
Prayer Book I and Gates of
Prayer, both originally
published by the Central
Conference of American
Rabbis.
At the UAHC's biennial
convention in New Orleans
last fall, Rabbi Alexander
Schindler, president of the
body, criticized what he said
was the failure of American
Jewish congregations to at-
tract Soviet immigrants into
Jewish religious and com-
munal life here.
"The result is that most
Soviet Jews here have
dropped out of contact with
the Jewish community."
Greece Desires
Israeli Ties
Athens (JTA) — Greece's
new conservative prime
minister, Constantine Mit-
sotakis, seems determined to
establish full diplomatic re-
lations with Israel, despite
severe strains that have de-
veloped since 150 Orthodox
Jews settled in a building in
Jerusalem's Old City owned
by the Greek Orthodox
Church.
"We have taken the deci-
sion for the de jure recogni-
tion of Israel," Mitsotakis
told parliament last week.
Another top-ranking
Greek minister, Miltiades
Evert, pledged that "the
New Democracy government
will normalize and improve
its relations with Israel."
It will be the first time
Greece will have ties with
Israel since its founding in
1948. It has maintained de
facto relations with Israel,
and Israel has maintained a
diplomatic mission in
Athens since 1949.
But despite the clear war-
ming signs, Jews here are
uneasy that the incident in
Jerusalem could sour rela-
tions just as Greece's
previously cool attitude
toward Israel seems about to
change.
