Jerusalem (JPFS) . On
the first day of his historic
visit to Israel,
Czechoslovakian President
Vaclav Havel was informed
by his Israeli hosts that
peace blandishments made
by PLO leader Yassir Arafat
recently in Prague were
completely disingenuous.
Officials of the Prime Min-
ister's office said that
despite prior reports, Havel
did not offer to mediate bet-
ween Israel and the PLO.
Havel, the first Eastern
European leader ever to visit
Israel, arrived on a state
visit last week amid con-
siderable pomp and cir-
cumstance, and was formal-
ly welcomed by his host,
President Chaim Herzog.
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Shamir and Foreign Min-
ister Moshe Arens, who held
separate meetings with
Havel, both told him that
Arafat could not be trusted.
Shamir reportedly said:
"with you he talks peace,
but with us he talks terror,
and he practices it."
Havel, according to in-
formed sources, did not
claim that Arafat accepted
U.S. Secretary of State
James Baker's initiative for
an Israeli-Palestinian dia-
logue, as had been reported
earlier. Czechoslovakian of-
ficials confirmed that Havel
brought no message from
Arafat to Shamir.
Arens, in his talk with the
Czechoslovakian leader, re-
portedly linked Arafat with
Iraqi president Saddam
Hussein. He cited an Arafat
statement that the intifada
would be won by sticks,
stones, and "el-Abed," the
ballistic missile which can
deliver binary chemical
weapons.
Czechoslovakian Foreign
Minister Jeri Dienstbier
said his country is not trying
to initiate any new peace
moves in the Middle East.
"We have come here to look
around, listen, and feel the
air. We are not from here."
