"We moved her to an apart- ment complex that provided some services hoping it would broaden her social life and en- courage her to be more active. That worked for a while. However, when her boyfriend died, she stopped going for meals and needed more supervision." Liss contacted JFS and they helped place her mother in a group apartment. "Mother lives with two other women in the apart- ment," says Liss. "A house- keeper comes every day to clean and prepare their meals. People come to the apartment on a regular basis to lead them in exercises, to teach them how to make jewelry, to run political discussions. There's about nine or ten living arrange- ments like that in the build- ing and they go on trips as a group. Mother's been there over a year now and likes it. I know, because when it's time for her to leave my house, she says she's ready to go home to her home." For the elderly, moving trig- gers fears of being dependent on others for daily activities. New ideas and change are threatening and anxiety makes it difficult to see op- tions. Older parents are try- ing hard to maintain a sense of self while changes take place all around them. My mother's past and present have become interchangeable in the way she defines herself. "I am who I've always been" and "I'm not going to change at this age" are lines that have been played dozens of times. ❑ One City — Many Dreams The Detroit Zionist Federation in cooperattion with the Jewish Educators Coun- cil is pleased to sponsor this contest and exhibition to help students deepen their understanding of Israel in a creative way while sharing their artistic impression with the community.
