FINE ARTS' EXTRAORDINARY SHOW OF NATIVE MERICAN JEWELRY Exhibitions In Southfield ► An exhibition featuring the watercolors of Dodi Sikevitz and the decorative functional stoneware of Diane M. Zakala will be held in the Civic Center Gallery of the Parks and Recreation Building through May 4. Sikevitz has been painting and drawing for more than 50 years and has been in many exhibitions including the "Arts and Flowers" exhibi- tion at the Detroit Institute of Arts where she was a semi- finalist. Recently, her water- color painting, "Thirteen-Oh- Three," was featured on the cover of the Michigan Bar Journal. Zakala is a self-taught pot- ter whose functional stoneware is known for its in- tense blue glazes. She has worked at her own studio for the last 12 years, and has ex- hibited her work throughout Michigan in such shows as the Ann Arbor Art Fair, Meadowbrook and the Pewabic Pottery Company. The Design Center will light up many of its showrooms, normally open only to interior decorators and their clients, so that din- ner guests can stroll the halls and view the home fur- nishings, model kitchens, fabrics and lighting on display. Japanese Flowers At Somerset Ikebana, Chapter 85, presents "A Glimpse of Japan" flower exhibit at the Somerset Mall in Troy May 2-6. More than 100 Japanese flower arrangements will be shown. The four major schools of Japanese flower arranging will be featured, Ikenobo, the oldest; O'Hara, the most disciplined; Sogetsu, naturalistic; and Ichiyo, the newest. Bonsai and Japanese Folk Art, ukiyo-e wood block prints, origami paper folding, hari-e paste pictures, and fans and bamboo will be displayed. DIA Exhibits Students' Work The 53rd Annual Detroit Public Schools Exhibition continues at the Detroit In- stitute of Arts April 29. More than 700 works in all media will be on view, created by students from pre-school through high school. Another aspect of the arts is honored for the 2nd year with the publication of student writers' prose and poetry, in- spired by paintings and sculpture in the DIA collec- tion. The booklet this year is in full color and is free to visitors in the exhibition gallery. Quilt Show In Birmingham BASCC, Birmingham Area Senior Coordinating Council and Center, will host "Quilts! Quilts! Quilts!," an exhibition and sale of 70 quilts dating 1840 to 1980, on May 3 and 4 at Evergreen Center, 13 Mile Road at Evergreen Road, Bir- mingham, from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Coordinated by Merry Silber, long-time curator of quilt shows throughout the country, the show will feature three major Michigan collec- tions — The Jean Conway Collection, the Kempf Hogan Collection and the Albert and Merry Silber collection.
