James Blanchard's campaign as an Oakland County field direc- tor. He stayed on board as part of the transition team. Next, he secured a job as the community development director for U.S. Rep. Sander Levin, D-Southfield. "I didn't like political life," he says. "Your job is only to keep that politician in office. I was looking for an out and decided to go into business for myself." Silver then started reading trade publications for several different professions. A regular customer at a 10- minute oil change station in Pontiac, Silver was curious. He started reading. After he discovered that drive-through oil change shops were thriving on the east and west coasts, Silver decided to purchase land for the first Oil Dispatch. "It made sense," Silver says. "I didn't know anything about the oil busi- ness, but I didn't know anything about politics when I got into that field. "I am a voracious reader," he says. "I had faith in my- self." With the help of his father, Donald Silver, who co-signed original financing papers as partner for the first store, Silver bought property in Southfield at Eight Mile Road and Inkster. It took seven months to secure proper building and zoning permits. "On day one, we were busy," he says. "The first one went very well. I started paying myself a salary after two months." The second shop opened in Redford; a third in Farm- ington. Silver then acquired his father's portion of the business. His brother, Steve Silver, joined the business after the Farmington store's opening. Those who know Silver say that although he appears to be dogmatic about his views, he is a strong, able busi- nessman with a zealous pur- suit of success. And, they say, he is an independent thinker. Adds his brother, Steve Silver,"Charlie is incredibly driven. He does not know how to take no for an an- swer. He is never willing to accept that something is not possible." Silver is always in the market for new oppor- tunities. Recently, he became a distributor for the Phoenix cookie, a high-fiber meal substitute sold throughout the metropolitan Detroit area in health food and other specialty stores. "I love multi-level marketing," he says. "By selling these cookies, you get others into the business. o SJC Al Malor Credit Cards and Layaways Accepted • EXCEPT OOLD CHIUNS Only Til April 29th • Hagopian Announces Serious Savings!
