used in her presentations in-
cluded the message that
through Jesus Christ,
students "will never die"
and that he is "the Truth."
The request followed a
letter from Jeffrey Sinensky,
director of the Anti-
Defamation League Civil
Rights Division, which
called attention to reports
that Turner had been using
her position to preach Chris-
tianity in the public schools.
"We do agree that Ms.
Turner should exercise
careful judgment as to when
she performs Christian
songs, and we have asked
her in the future to refrain
from utilizing these songs in
her presentations to public
school children," responded
Leonard Horn, chairman of
the Pageants Board and its
chief executive officer.
"Miss Turner's comments
are cause for concern as both
an educational matter and a
matter of law," Sinensky
wrote.

Sri Lanka Wants
Israel Out

New York (JTA) — The
president of Sri Lanka has
,ordered Israel to close its
diplomatic mission there
within 30 days, according to
reports obtained by the
World Jewish Congress and
verified by Israeli, American
and Sri Lankan officials.
But there has been no offi-
cial break in relations, ac-
cording to Yuval Rote, a
spokesman at the Israeli
Consulate here. He said the
Israeli representative in Sri
Lanka, Uri Noi, had been
told to leave the country in
30 days.
A spokeswoman at the Sri
Lankan Consulate here con-
firmed that President
Ranasinghe Premadasa had
decided to close the Israeli
interests section at the U.S.
Embassy by April 20. But
she said there was no men-
tion of the Israeli diplomat
leaving.
Sri Lanka, known for
years as Ceylon, is an island
nation southeast of India
that has been plagued by
ethnic violence in recent
years between the Sinhalese
majority and Tamil
separatists.
In recent years, there have
been reports of military co-
operation between Sri
Lanka and Israel. Sri
Lankan officials have claim-
ed numerous times that they
purchased weaponry from
Israel, China and Pakistan
to fight the Tamil in-
surgents.
