KOSINS AND KOSINS BIG & TALL

repeated the words "love" and
"family" over and over, like
an ancient, familiar chant.
Moshe blessed the Lord for
his care of Mama and us. He
blessed the love she inspired,
even when her expression of
love had inspired enmity. He
affirmed the strength of the
family and admired Mama's
commitment to holding us
together. He fervently prayed
to her spirit for forgiveness
for any grief or anger he
might have caused.
The force that rocked
Moshe back and forth so
steadily, so passionately,
reached out and rocked me.
His words rang with a
resolute tone of truth that
relaxed my chest like a warm
hand. The passion, hope and
security Moshe generated as
he spoke were feelings that I
had been unable to muster in
my youth and that my
teachers could not inspire.
Now, as the circles of Moshe's
message wound around the
room, drawing us together in-
to a web of mutual support
and purpose, those feelings
wrapped around me like my
grandfather's tallit. His words
released my tears and then
soothed. For the first time in
my life, Judaism had become
meaningful, essential.
Moshe concluded with a
prayer spoken in traditional
Hebrew. The words were
rhythmic and sorrowful. And
although they were un-
familiar and awkward to my
mind, they were spoken in a
code that my heart
understood. And when the
prayer was over and I em-
phatically added, "Amen," I
was startled and heartened
by the chorus that joined
me.
