Emunah Women
Assist Soviets
Jerusalem (JTA) — More
than 2,000 Soviet immigrant
families have been led
through the initial steps of
Israeli life by volunteers
from the Emunah Women of
America.
Meeting the arriving olim
at the airport, the volunteers
later accompany them to ap-
pointments and take them
shopping in Israeli super-
markets.
They also help the recent
Soviet arrivals furnish their
new homes, supplying them
with beds, linens, blankets,
closets, cooking stoves, in
addition to religious articles
such as mezuzot, tefillin,
tallitot, Sabbath clocks and
hot plates, candlesticks and
Passover dishes.
The Emunah volunteers
assume personal respon-
sibility for the moral and
material welfare of their
adopted olim, with frequent
visits, invitations to their
homes for the Sabbath and
holidays, and providing
children with "big brothers"
and "big sisters."
Emunah Women is trying
to steer the olim in a re-
ligious direction, using re-
ligious instruction and spe-
cial events such as Shab-
batonim, holiday celebra-
tions, circumcisions, b'nai
mitzvah and tours of holy
and religious sites.
The olim are also provided
with Emunah-sponsored job
training and vocational
counseling.

Cooler Economy
Slows Inflation
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The cost-
of-living index rose 1.2 per-
cent in March, according to
figures released by the Cen-
tral Bureau of Statistics on
Sunday.
The less-than-expected in-
crease was attributed to the
general economic slowdown.
A 2 percent rise had been
forecast by economic experts
and the Finance Ministry
because of the shekel's
devaluation last month and
the 1 percent hike of the
Value Added Tax.
But the economic
downturn kept costs from
rising. Experts noted that
shelves remained fully
stocked during the month.
Consumer resistance forc-
ed vendors to lower prices.
Only house and rental
costs rose in March, by a
sharp 2.2 percent, reflecting
the upsurge in demand for
housing for new immigrants.
