MAY 1987 — A dispute breaks out between Shamir and Peres over the latter's efforts to convene an inter- national peace conference against Shamir's wishes. The resulting cabinet crisis is defused. NOVEMBER 1988 — Knesset elections, held on the expiration of the previous Knesset's full term of office, result in another deadlock between the Labour Party and the Likud, with the latter having the option of forming a right- wing government which could command a narrow majority in the Knesset. DECEMBER 1988 — After weeks of haggling, a new national unity govern- ment receives a vote of con- fidence from the Knesset. Under the coalition agree- ment, Shamir is prime min- ister for the full term of the government, with Peres as his deputy. The smaller par- ties represented in the Knesset include the NRP, Shas and Agudat Yisrael. APRIL 1989 — Shamir launches the government's peace initiative for elections in the territories, peace talks with neighboring Arab states still at war with Israel, strengthening rela- tions with Egypt and re- settling the Arab refugees. JULY 1989 — Fierce oppo- sition within the Likud to the peace initiative, led by Ariel Sharon, David Levy and Yitzhak Moda'i, comes to a head at a meeting of the Likud Central Committee. At this meeting a com- promise is reached. The committee adopts "constraints" on the peace initiative binding the Likud members of the cabinet. The resulting now with Labour is defused when the cabinet reaffirms the initiative "with no additions or altera- tions." NOVEMBER 1989 — Agudat Yisrael leaves the coalition, charging that the Likud had broken party ranks in making decisions on the territories. DECEMBER 1989 to JANUARY 1990 — Shamir fires Science Minister Ezer Weizman over Weizman's alleged contacts with the PLO. After protests from Labor, Weizman is reinstated, but loses his place in the inner cabinet. FEBRUARY 1990 — At a meeting of the Likud Cen- tral Committee, Sharon an- nounces his resignation as Minister of Industry and Trade to protest against the government's peace in- itiative. Moshe Nissim assumes his portfolio. The National Jewish Book Awards are presented annu- ally to authors of Jewish books of scholarly or literary excellence, which are available in the United States and Canada and published during the previous year. Categories include autobiography, children's literature, contemporary Jewish life, fiction, Holo- caust, Israel, Jewish history, Jewish thought and visual arts. Among noteworthy selec- tions are From, That Time and Place, t h e autobiography of Holocaust historian Lucy , Dawidowicz, for autobiography; See Under: Love, by David Grossman, for fiction; Jews in America, a photographic study of Jewish life in the United States, for visual arts; and Jacob's Ladder, by Alan Collins, in the chil- dren's literature/picture book category.
