Jerusalem (JPFS) — Some
of the landmarks in the
stormy history of the na-
tional unity government.
SEPTEMBER 1984 —
After the July Knesset elec-
tions result in a stalemate
between the Alignment and
the Likud, the first national
unity government is put
together. Under the terms of
the coalition agreement,
Shimon Peres is to be prime
minister for two years, and
then change places with
Deputy Prime Minister Yit-
zhak Shamir. In protest at
the agreement, Mapam
leaves the Alignment. The
other parties joining the co-
alition are the National Re-
ligious Party, Shas, Shinui,
Morasha and Agudat
Yisrael.
DECEMBER 1984 —
Shas leaves the government
over a dispute with the NRP
over the allocation of cabinet
portfolios. A compromise is
found, and Shas stays.
MAY 1985 — The govern-
ment authorizes the release
of 1,150 Arabs imprisoned
for terrorism or other securi-
ty offenses in exchange for
three Israeli prisoners-of-
war held by Ahmed Jibril's
Popular Front for the Lib-
eration of Palestine-General
Command.
JUNE 1985 — The army's
pull-back from Lebanon is
completed.
JUNE 1985 — The
government adopts a "new
economic plan" designed to
cut inflation, which is runn-
ing at record levels. The new
shekel, worth 1,000 old
shekels, makes its ap-
pearance.
APRIL 1986 — A bitter
dispute breaks out between
Shilmon Peres and Finance
Minister Yitzhak Moda'i
over the latter's attacks on
the prime minister. The
crisis ends when Moda'i

agrees to exchange portfolios
with Justice Minister Moshe
Nissim.
JULY 1986 — Moda'i
resigns from the cabinet
after making further attacks
on Peres. Fellow Liberal,
Tourism Minister Avraham
Sharir, succeeds Moda'i as
justice minister, while re-
taining his own portfolio.
SEPTEMBER 1986 — In-
dustry and Trade Minister
Ariel Sharon creates a furor
when he implies that the
government's peace in-
itiative was to blame for a
bloody terrorist attack on an
Istanbul synagogue which
claims 22 victims Sharon is
forced to publicly retract his
comments.
OCTOBER 1986 —
Shamir succeeds Peres as
prime minister under the
terms of the coalition
agreement after a prolonged
dispute with the Labour
Party over the distribution
of cabinet portfolios. Health
Minister Mordecai Gur
resigns because he does not
wish to serve under Shamir
He is replaced by Shoshana
Arbeli-Almoslino.
JANUARY 1987 — Rabbi
Yitzhak Peretz of Shas
resigns as interior minister
over the cabinet's refusal to
delete the category of
"national group" from iden-
tity cards in the wake of the
High Court ruling ordering
the ministry to register
Reform convert Shoshana
Miller as a Jew. He returns
as minister without portfolio
in May.
MAY 1987 — Shinui bolts
the coalition, citing the
Likud's obstruction of the
peace initiative, excessive
concessions to the religious
parties, and the national
unity's government's in-
ability to function. Gad
Ya'acobi takes over from
Shinui's Amnon Rubinstein
