A
little child shakes
your hand and you
want to cry . . .
They're tears of joy because
you know this youngster was
born without upper limbs .. .
and you are witnessing just
one of the many rewards in
seeing a child lead a more
normal life.
This is much of what Varie-
ty, "The Heart of Show
Business," has been all about
for over 50 years in the
Detroit area . . . Variety Club
International has been in ex-
istence since 1928.
Needy youngsters get the
latest in medical,
technological and therapeutic
knowledge . . . Makes no dif-
ference what . . . heart
defects, missing limbs or
other handicapped conditions,
all are helped to live like
other kids.
Little wonder why such an
organization as Variety is so
worthy . . . here is nothing
more heart warming than
helping a needy child . . .
Through Variety's Cardiology
Center at Children's
Hospital, Myoelectric Center
at the Rehabilitation In-
stitute, Child Development
Service at Detroit Institute
for Children, communication
devices, limbs for children
without them, speech
therapy, physical therapy, etc.,
is provided.
There can be no greater
satisfaction in life than
assisting a child who needs
help.
The annual Celebrity Ball
by Variety, the Children's
Charity, May 5 at Westin
Hotel in Detroit's
Renaissance Center this year,
is expected to be one of the
biggest . . . as Broadway
Salutes Variety featuring
lyricists Betty Comden and
Adloph Green ("Singing In
The Rain," etc.), Katharine
Buffaloe of Phantom Of The
Opera, Sal Viviano of
Romance/Romance, emcee
Gene Taylor, Johnny Trudell
orchestra and black tie
optional.
I can't think of any honor
I'll cherish more than receiv-
ing the Heart Award for print
media . . . Other Heart Award
recipients will be: Chuck Da-
ly, Detroit Pistons coach,
sports; David Lawrence,
former Detroit Free Press
publisher, community ser-
vice; Tom Ryan, WOMC-FM,
broadcast media; and Sheri
Nichols, singer, and Richard
Berent, musical director,
entertainment . . . Frank
Newman, head of F&M
Distributors, will be given the
Humanitarian Award, and
Alan Teitel, president of
Teitel Brokerage, the Pioneer
of Variety award.
Call 855-6440 . . . It's the
greatest feeling in the world
to see a needy youngster
smile again.
THERE ARE usually over
200 gals attending the an-
nual Harmony ORT boutique
shopping and fashion show
. . . This year, co-presidents
Linda Lax and Lisa Binder
are expecting more for
number five . . . This Wednes-
day at Temple Beth El.
Cute Cathy Leahan, Chan-
nel 7 anchor lass, will be com-
mentator of the fashion show
with styles by 14 stores .. .
Variety helps
children with all
kinds of medical
needs.
Boutique opens at 6:30 p.m.
and the men's and women's
fashion parade is 7 p.m. . . .
$15 also includes hors
d'oeuvres and desserts . . .
Call Amy Silverman,
661-1959.
ALL SHOPS at Applegate
Square on Northwestern
Highway and Inkster will be
selling specially printed T-
shirts during first week in
May to benefit abused and
neglected children cared for
by its neighbor, the Sarah
Fisher Home . . . Shirts will
be $10.
45 YEARS AGO, Henry
Seligman was wounded in ac-
tion while serving with
General George Patton's
Third Army . . . and still
proudly shows his eight
medals as president of the
Southfield Senior Men's Club
. . . Henry is past commander
of Silverman Post .135, Jewish
War Veterans.
TRUE LOVE is . . . the
togetherness of Bud and Mert
Sherbow . . . who recently
celebrated their retirements
and birthdays at the same
time.
Surprise party for them was
given by their children, Jeff
and Sandra Sherbow and
Mark and Sue Sherbow .. .
Mert had been at the same
job 31 years . . . and Bud was
a restaurant and nitery "Mr.
Everything" from bartender
to manager . . . his retirement
follows Bud's last job as
manager at Buddy's Pizza on
Northwestern. ❑
