Aids Emigres

Project Kesher of the World
Zionist Organization has a
new program, Operation
Homecoming. Based in Israel,
Operation Homecoming offers
Americans between the ages
of 18 and 40 the opportunity
to work with immigrants
from Ethiopia and the Soviet
Union in the initial stages of
the absorption process.
Ethiopian and Russian
men, women, and children
need housing, employment
training, counselling, Hebrew
instruction, and many other
social services. Operation
Homecoming will enable
American Youth to work with
Israelis, providing these
services.
A volunteer-program,
Operation Homecoming, is
scheduled for the summer of
1990, when Israel expects to
accommodate tens of
thousands of olim from the
Soviet Union, with many ar-
riving from Ethiopia as well.
Participants will be required
to dedicate a minimum of two
weeks to the program, with a
maximum option of two
months. The program will
place individuals in volunteer
positions, according to their
needs, abilities, and areas of
expertise, with effort made to
accommodate all par-
ticipants. Volunteers will be
expected to work eight hours
per day, and will be put up in
dormitory-style housing in
cities, towns, and kibbutzim
throughout Israel.

The total price of Operation
Homecoming is $1,099. This
includes round-trip air fare on
El Al Airlines, and a one-
week stay in the Ramada
Renaissance Hotel, where
participants will take part in
Kesher '90, the second an-
nual reunion-mission for
Israel Program alumni,
scheduled for June 6-14.
After a week of meetings
with leading Israeli officials,
tours through the country,
and activities with both
Israeli and American peers,
volunteers will participate in
a two-day orientation session,
which will provide back-
ground information on Soviet
and Ethiopian Jewry. They
will then begin working with
their assigned populations.
