was a typical Shabbat dinner
with a Moroccan flair. We en-
joyed Moroccan wine and our
host made sure he included
every prayer. The Hebrew
words were the same, yet the
melodies were different. He
was anxious to tell us about
his four children. None of
them live in Morocco
anymore.
The Frenchgovernment of-
fers free college and graduate
degrees to all Moroccan
students who pass certain ex-
ams after graduation from
high school. Once the
younger generation has lived
in a modern society, they
don't usually return to Moroc-
co. Three of his children now
live in Israel — one lives in
France.

rural communities, primitive
dwellings and shabby
peasants as well.
Our highlight came on Fri-
day night when we visited a
synagogue located on the se-
cond floor of a building. The
service was Orthodox with
the women sitting in a nar-
row room and the men in the
larger room that served as the
sanctuary.
The decor was Moorish
with beautiful wooden carv-
ings. The room where I sat
had dozens of chandeliers,
which served as memorial
lights. Following the service,
which lasted about 45
minutes, we were invited to
accompany another
American couple to share
Shabbat dinner in the home
of the president of the Jewish
community of Fez. This was
an honor and a bigger treat
than we expected.
It was Sukkot and dinner
was eaten in the Sukkah. It

The Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion will host an informa-
tional meeting about mis-
sions to Israel at 7:30 p.m.
April 30 at the United
Hebrew Schools building.
Those attending will hear
an overview of the missions
and will meet with represen-
tatives of each of the trips.
Family missions are plann-
ed for June 24-July 4, July
8-18, Aug. 12-22 and Dec.
23-Jan. 2. The schedule in-
cludes visits to Masada and to
Detroit's Project Renewal
sister city, Yavne; ar-
cheological digs, Shabbat in
Jerusalem and children's
activities.
A singles mission, led by
Gilbert Borman and Robert
Colburn, will take place July
1-11. Young men and women
age 25-40 will visit sites and
cities and participate in social
and cultural activities with
their Israeli peers as well as
300 singles from across the
U.S. Richard Blumenstein is
national campaign chairman
of the mission. A second
singles mission is scheduled
for July 15-25.
A pre-mission to Poland is
available to persons who join
the "Morasha" (Heritage)
Young Leadership Mission,
slated for Oct. 21-30.
Detroiters Susan Alterman
and David Victor and Na-
tional Chairman Dr. Owen
Perlman will lead.
The Exodus Mission, for
contributors of a minimum of
$5,000 to the 1991 Allied
Jewish Campaign, will take

resettlement in Israel was
realized in part with funds
raised by the Allied Jewish
Campaign.
