questions to better unders-
tand people.
"When the team travels, a
lot of the runners just sit in
their rooms, but I like to get
out and see the city. Some-
times I look in the Yellow
Pages to find the synagogues
and see some of the architec-
ture. I consider myself a
thinker and don't ever want
to stop learning.
"Eventually, I want to start
a consulting firm of an-
thropologists in Detroit. Then
I would like to make major
contributions to Jewish-black
relations there!"
His philosophy of life is, "In-
quiry leads to understanding,
which leads to knowledge,
which then leads to wisdom.
I value all those things. I was
raised to fight prejudice and
respect all steps of life."
Mifsud, whose father is
from Malta, was reared in a
liberal home in which there
was no religion. He was
taught to think and be self-
reliant. "I was raised to be
open to all religions and was
given the choice to choose a
religion," said Mifsud, who
became a Jew 21/2 years ago.
The conversion was under
the direction of Rabbi Robert
Dobrusin of Ann Arbor's Con-
gregation Beth Israel at Con-
gregaton Beth Achim in
Southfield. Mohel Samuel
Greenbaum performed the
brit milah.
"I chose Judaism because it
sees the world as I do," Mifsud
said. "I love the fact that
family is central."
"I felt most comfortable
with Judaism and one reason
is that Judaism tells how one
should conduct his or her life
and then puts the respon-
sibility on the man. I'm not
the type to do things because
I am told what to do. In
Judaism, choices are left up to
the man and force him to put
thought into his life.
"I like what Aaron David
Gordon, an early 20th Cen-
tury Jewish thinker, once
said. 'An active search for a
higher life, is a higher life.' I
am consistently trying to find
ways to increase my
knowledge of the world and
that leads to a better
understanding of myself.
"I think there is a relation-
ship between my social con-
sciousness and being Jewish,"
Mifsud said. "I see the world
from the perspective of a
minority. I think everyone
should be socially aware.

"I think it's also important
for Jews to look out for other
minorities. One of the major
themes of Passover, for in-
stance, is to remember those
who have been oppressed!'
Since he keeps kosher, Mif-
sud often finds himself
reading labels while on road
trips. "It gets difficult, but
that's part of the beauty of
the religion. Every meal you
eat should be a conscious deci-
sion. I think I appreciate my
meals more now. It has also
caused me to have more
discipline and self-restraint in
other things in my life," Mif-
sud said.
"The way I present myself
is important to me. I see
myself as a Jew and the way
people view me, is the way
people will view the Jewish
community," he added.
Mifsud, who attends ser-
vices at Beth Israel in Ann
Arbor, is a member of Alpha
Epsilon Pi fraternity. "I
haven't been as involved as
much as I would like" because
of track, "but the brothers
have always supported me
and I appreciate that," Mifsud
said. ❑

HURT.

Saves By Levy
Trip Compuware

Madison, Wis. —
Rochester, Minn., goalie Jeff
Levy's 30 saves helped
thwart Compuware of
Southfield's bid for its se-
cond National Junior A
hockey championship in five
seasons Sunday, with
Rochester winning the title,
4-2.
Compuware had tied the
game 2-2 on a goal by center
Brian Rolston.
"We played well enough to
win the game, but Levy
came up with the big saves
when he had to," Corn-
puware coach Andy Weiden-
bach said. It was Weiden-
bach's last national title try
because he will be coaching
the Detroit Compuware
Ambassadors next season in
the Ontario Hockey League.
