Ruth Edith Rome Ship Fire Victim Ruth Edith Rome, 27, formerly of East Lansing, of New York City, died April 7 in a fire aboard a ship sailing from Oslo, Norway, to Fredrikshavn, Denmark. She 75 YEARS OF PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION nationally with Evita and in Europe with West Side Stoiy. Among her favorite roles were Anna in King and I, Mother Abess in Sound of Music and Louise in Gypsy. She is survived by her parents, Winifred Rome of East Lansing, and Louis Rome of Ann Arbor. Services in East Lansing followed by burial in Detroit. Sol Konikow, 81, Produce Buyer Sol Konikow, 81, a produce buyer, of Southfield, died April 16. Mr. Konikow was born in Russia and had been a Detroit area resident for many years. Mt Konikow was a self-employed produce buyer and manager. He was a member of Temple Beth El, the Louis Marshall Lodge of B'nai B'rith, Jewish Com- munity Center, and was a volunteer worker at the Jewish Community Center on 10 Mile Road. He leaves his wife, Bernice; a son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Nancy of Seattle, Wash., a daughter, Claire of Southfield; sisters, Celia Must of Oak Park and Yetta Levine of Southfield; and two grandchildren. Samuel Katz, 76, Founded Mailers Ruth Edith Rome was employed as an enter- tainer in a musical revue on the ship. As described by the Associate Dean, School of Speech, Northwestern University, "Ruth was a warm, vibrant, giving person ." She had a gift for relating to children and adults alike. Anfriend wrote that "she had a love and en- thusiasm for performing and was encouraging and suppor- tive of her co-performers. She always spoke highly of her family." A graduate of Okemos High School and Northwestern University, Ms. Rome had been living in New York City where she was pursuing a career in musical theater. Ruth had performed in sum- mer stock in Michigan and other states, off-Broadway and on-Broadway. Mr. Katz was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and had been a Detroit area resident for the past 60 years. Mr. Katz was president of American Mailers Co. since 1945, one of the largest direct mail marketers in the Midwest. He also was active with the Democratic Party. He leaves his wife, Martha; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Pauline of Bloomfield Hills; a sister, Shirley Stone of Southfield; and one grandchild.
