Downtown Fox #1, trailing
most of the game, knotted the
score at the end of regulation
play and defeated Pisgah #3,
65-61, in double overtime to
win the Detroit B'nai B'rith
Men's "A" League basketball
playoffs championship Sun-
day at Oakland Community
College in Farmington Hills.
A missed free throw by DF
#1 with four seconds to go in
regulation time appeared to
seal the victory for Pisgah,
but a lane violation gave
Downtown Fox, the regular-
season champion, new life.
That free throw opportunity
was converted and the game
went into the first overtime.
In "C" League playoff ac-
tion, Downtown Fox #3 upset
West Division regular-season
champ Morganthau #2, 57-52,
in overtime. In the "B"
League finale, Brotherhood/
Bloch, regular-season titlist
despite being picked for no
better than-fifth place, com-
pleted its big season by dum-
ping Downtown Fox #2, 54-41.
League winners Morgan-
thau #2 and Brotherhood/
Bloch each will move up one
division next season, accor-
ding to Marty Melton, basket-
ball commissioner.

The American Jewish ten-
nis trio of Aaron Krickstein,
Brad Gilbert and Jay Berger
— ranked among the top 10
by the Association of Tennis
Professionals (ATP) — are ear-
ning high praise these days
from tennis veteran and
"landsman" Harold Solomon.
"I just admire what they ac-
complished, because it's so
much tougher now to stay on
the top 10 list than when I
played," Solomon told the
Broward (Fla.) Jewish World
recently.
In March, ATP ranked
Krickstein, from Grosse
Pointe Woods, seventh;
Gilbert, from Oakland, Calif.,
fourth and Berger, from Plan-
tation, Fla., ninth.
In addition, Krickstein and
Gilbert won their quarter-
final Davis Cup match for the

United States and have ad-
vanced to the semifinals Sept.
21-23 in Austria. The
Austrians defeated Italy, 5-0.
But Solomon said he was
"not really surprised (how the
trio has done) because all
three are mentally tough and
never give up on themselves.
Even though a Lendl or a
Becker can be overpowering,
Gilbert, Krickstein and
Berger are never intimidated
by any opponent," added
Solomon, who ranked among
the top 10 himself from
1976-1980.
In the Davis Cup semis
April 1, Krickstein posted a
6-2, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory over
Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia
in Prague, while teammate
Gilbert swept Karel Novacek,
6-2, 6-1, to complete a 4-1 U.S.
victory.
For Krickstein, the Czech
victory helped ease the sting
of his last Davis Cup ap-
pearance. He lost the final
match in Paraguay in 1987
and the U.S. bowed, 3-2.
Krickstein and Gilbert give
the United States its first all-
Jewish Davis Cup team.
Tennis observers feel any
one of the three have a good
shot at becoming America's
next tennis star, considering
the decline of Andre Agassi,
Jimmy Connors and John
McEnroe.
Other Jewish tennis pros
gaining attention these days,
according to the Florida
paper, are Amos Mansdorf of
Israel, Argentina's Martin
Jaite and Jim Grabb of Tuc-
son, Ariz. Among the women,
Elise Burgin of Baltimore,
Md., is in the top 10 in
doubles.
