ball team captain. Berris won
six letters at Wayne and was
known for his one-handed
hook shot. In 1936, he was in-
vited to the Olympic Trials.
A 1942 graduate of the
University of Michigan Den-
tal School, Berris entered the
Army Air Corps, where he
continued playing basketball
in his spare time.
Berris became the team
dentist to the Pistons from
the day they came to Detroit,
serving until his death.
A great believer in the
value of sports for youth, Ber-
ris was a Jewish Community
Center basketball league
coach for many years. He also
coached the youth basketball
team at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek in the 1950s.
The Henry "Honey" Berris
Memorial Basketball League
was established at the JCC in
1980.
