ple I see at affairs.
MCF's Eighth Annual
Dinner-Dance here is May 19
at Westin Hotel's Renais-
sance Ballroom . . . Last
year's dinner, chaired by
Gene and Marcia Apple-
baum, netted almost
$500,000, making it the
largest single-event fun-
draiser of any area nonprofits
for 1989 according to Crain's
Detroit Business.
This year's honorary
chairpersons will be Paul and
Marlene Borman . . . Jean
and Pat Hartman will be din-
ner chairfolks.
Biggest fundraiser of them
all (over $1 billion for
children's causes) Jerry Lewis
will greet the expected crowd
of over 1,500.
For reservations, call MCF,
833-0710 . . . (Patron tickets
are $300 per person, sponsors
$150.)
"HOW'S THE weather
been here?" ,I asked the bag-
gage gent at West Palm
Beach Airport in Florida .. .
"Nice and hot," he said. "We
haven't had rain in quite a
while, sure could use some"
. . . "Don't worry," said
soothsayer me, "I'm here" .. .
Wonder how many people
wanted to wring my neck
because it rained that night
and some of the next day.

ON PLANE ENROUTE

to Florida to celebrate their
40th anniversary, Mollie and
Herman Yagoda recalled be-
ing married at Bel-Aire
Catering on Woodward,
owned by Sally and Sam
Klein . . . Sam Emmer was
the orchestra leader . . .
When they went inside, the
weather was beautiful .. .
But something happened

while the wedding was going
on . . . A bad snow storm sud-
denly appeared . . . and
Mollie and Herman had to ex-
tend their wedding night an
extra day at the former Hotel
Statler on Washington
Boulevard.
17TH ANNUAL Michigan
Hospitality Industry Culi-
nary Arts Salon will be at
Fairlane Manor in Dearborn,
April 29, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. . . .
It'll feature the creative
works of over 300 entrants
from all areas of food service
. . . The annual food show
traditionally has individual
competitions in both profes-
sional and amateur
categories.
DO YOU sometimes
wonder why a restaurant
changes hands three or four
times before it succeeds? ..
Hugo's on Northwestern and
Franklin at 12 Mile didn't
last long . . . Hugo was a
gracious host who greeted the
ladies with the old-world
charm of kissing their hands,
sang in baritone on Thursday
opera nights and did the cok-
ing in his spare time.
When Hugo left, Joe
Brunetti took over,
redecorated the restaurant
from stem to stern and
specialized in Italian seafood
. . . But Brunetti's also folded
. . . Maybe Hugo and Brunet-
ti couldn't hack it because of
conflicts with owners and in-
vestors of the eating spot, all
professional men, not
restaurateurs . . . Needless to
say, present owner Chef Mar-
ty Wilk is making it big with
his Excalibur, which was
opened by the late Pat Archer
after Brunetti made his exit.
King's Arms on Southfield
and 10 Mile seemed to be do-
ing okay . . . Business was
brisk for lunch and dinner
and showers at $3 a plate
were popular . . . When the
restaurant closed, it became
Christopher's and then the
Landing . . . The Landing
menu featured dishes named
after spaceships and planets
and that was the theme of the
decor . . . A disco was an add-
ed attraction downstairs .. .
However, the Landing has
long gone into outer space.
The fourth time around, the
restaurant was called
Sultan's Table featuring
Mideastern dishes which
might have been too unusual
and exotic for the average
customer's taste . . . Sultan's
Table took off on a flying
carpet . . . but has since land-
ed and remains as Dimitris of
Southfield. ❑
