ing in Europe; both sides,
Bryen warned, could choose
to transfer many of those
weapons to other parts of the
world.
And an obvious destina-
tion is the Middle East,
where the recent worldwide
easing of tensions has not
been felt.
"What worries me is that
the Soviets may choose to do
the same thing," Bryen said.
"And they would be sending
equipment to Syria and
Iraq."
The result could add to the
never-ending Middle East
arms race — a prospect that
Israel's defenders here are
watching with concern.

Pro-Israel activists are
nervously awaiting an ex-
pected announcement from
Jerusalem on exactly when
Israel will break all remain-
ing ties with South Africa.
And despite the recent
reforms instituted by the
Pretoria regime. there are
indications that the expected
Israeli announcement will
not be enough to satisfy
either Jewish members of
Congress or their colleagues
in the Black Caucus.
According to a number of
reports, Israel is preparing
to announce a "phased ter-
mination" of the remaining
contracts over a period of
three to seven years.
But several Jewish con-
gressmen are sending out
strong private warnings that
anything longer than three
years would pose serious
problems for the Jewish con-
tingent on Capitol Hill.
A secret report from an of-
ficial at the Israeli embassy
recently took note of the
strong reaction against
reports of Israeli ties to
South Africa, and urged the
government in Jerusalem to
take a stronger public stance
against apartheid.
But again, both Jewish
and black legislators quietly
indicated tt,at such
statements would be mean-
ingless without a quick ter-
mination of the contracts.
"The Jewish members are
in a very tight spot," said
one pro-Israel activist who
has been closely involved in
the process.
