Lewin, who has become
'Karmella's close friend and
confidante, says the overall
effect was cumulative. "The
problem was that refuseniks
were yesterday's news," she
said. "People only wanted to
hear good news." But they
kept up the pressure — on
the Soviets, on the American
government and on Jewish
organizations — with letters,
phone calls, meetings. "The
last straw, we heard, was
that when [World Jewish
Congress president] Edgar
Bronfman met with [Soviet
foreign minister Eduard]
Schevernadze and mention-
ed Zev Raiz, Schevernadze
blew up and said enough al-
ready."
The end came suddenly.
Two weeks ago, after 18
years of refusal, Zev Raiz
was awakened by au-
thorities at his home in
Vilnius in the middle of the
night and told that he must
be gone by morning. He
packed some belongings,
gathered up his young son,
who was ill with fever, and
headed for Moscow. Hours
later, the borders of
Lithuania were sealed off.
From Moscow, Zev flew to
Israel. Karmella flew to
meet him there. Having em-
braced Orthodoxy eight
years ago, the family plans
to settle in Jerusalem, where
Zev will continue his Torah
studies and seek work in his
field as a mathematician.
But Karmella and Zev flew
to Washington last week to
thank those who had worked
so diligently on their behalf.
They met with President
Bush at the White House,
where they presented him
with a Haggadah, and then
flew to Israel to begin life in
their new home in time for
Passover, the festival of
freedom.
Addressing a group of
about 25 people last Monday
night at the Lewins' home,
Karmella spoke with quiet
eloquence. She expressed
her deep faith in God and
her conviction that "if you
take action, He will help.
"God makes miracles," she
said, "but the real miracle
was not what happened to
us. I did what I did because I
had no choice. The real
miracle was those of you who
had a choice not to help, not
to get involved, not to make
your busy lives more busy.
We will never forget all you
did for us, and how the Jew-
ish people make miracles."
"We have complete faith
that with our friends' help
and with God's blessing, our
dreams of coming home to
Jerusalem will soon be a
reality."
