Jews' Success
Costly: Study

New York (JTA) — Ethnic
distinctiveness and melting
pot conformity: both have
been venerated ideals in
American society, but have
also caused their share of
legal confusion.
According to a recent
sociological study, Jews
have been more successful in
the legal battle for equal
treatment than in the
struggle to preserve their
religious and cultural
distinctiveness without be-
ing penalized for doing so.
In a study commissioned
by the American Jewish
Committee, "Pluralism,
Jews and Equal Employ-
ment Opportunity," Paul
Burstein, professor of
sociology at the University
of Washington, explores
religious prejudice in the
labor market.
"Americans have been try-
ing to deal with the problem
of cultural diversity since
colonial times," says Burs-
tein. "One possible answer is
to treat people uniformly
and ignore their differences.
This is the answer that has
dominated American
history."
But this response, he con-
tinues, "is difficult to recon-
cile with pluralism."

New York (JTA) — More
than 1,600 Soviet Jews are
being trained in special pro-
grams in the United States,
sponsored by the Organiza-
tion for Rehabilitation and
Training.
ORT expects to expand
that number to well over
2,500 during 1990, according
to David Hermelin of
Detroit, president of the
American ORT Federation.
Jewish Agency Executive
Chairman Simcha Dinitz,
also chairman of the World
Zionist Organization, lauded
ORT's role in training Soviet
Jews in Israel.
With 750,000 Jewish
emigres expected over the
next six years, ORT is
expanding its current Israeli
programs for Soviet Jews
which emphasize computer
operations and hi-tech train-
ing.
Meanwhile, World Union
ORT Director-General
Joseph Harmatz reported
that ORT had been invited
to return to the Soviet Union
after being forced to suspend
operations 60 years ago.
