villain and an utter lunatic.
"Think again, comrades,
before adopting this resolu-
tion," he pleaded, although
apparently now convinced
that his case was lost. "If
you take this path, as you
appear inclined to do, you
will be making an enormous
mistake."
According to historian
Danilov, "this is how people
speak in moments of ge-
nuine tragedy, when not
only their own personal fates
are decided but that of the
entire cause to which they
have given their life, in this
case the cause of socialism
and revolution."
Trotsky's speech, he notes,
convincingly demonstrated
his lifelong lack of ambition
for personal power. Stalin,
however, "needed to sustain
the myth that the party
struggle in the 1920s was a
power struggle between all
those willingly or unwilling-
ly involved in it."
"With the help of this
myth," writes Danilov, "he
was able both to discredit his
enemies and to justify his
own power struggle, thus
reducing nobility to the level
of infamy."
At the time of Trotsky's
fateful address, there were
no formal stenographic
records of Central Com-
mittee proceedings and the
report of Tolstoy's speech,
found in the Communist
Party archives, consisted of
shorthand notes taken by
Stalin's assistant, B.
Bazhnov.
Danilov believes that
Bazhnov took his notes at
the instigation of Stalin,
who hoped to use them to
discredit the one man who
could have raised a credible
challenge to his accession to
power: "But," notes Danilov,
"it soon became clear that it
would be impossible to use
them against Trotsky."
"Trotsky," he says,
"evidently knew nothing of
the existence of the resume
of his speech or he would
have corrected the text and
would have kept a copy in
his own archive."
Nor, he adds, is there any
reason to distrust Bazhn.ov's
notes, "so fully does it con-
vey the sincerity and convic-
tion of Trotsky's words and
so damningly does it reflect
upon the organizers of this
kangaroo court."
The rest, quite literally, is
history. In 1927, Trotsky
was expelled from the Com-
munist Party. ❑
