Jewish-owned," he added.
His books have been
published by Alfred Knopf,
now a subsidiary of Random
House, and by Random
House itself, now owned by
the Newhouse family;
Farrar Strauss Giroux,
whose publisher is Roger
Strauss; Harper and Row,
owned by Rupert Murdoch, a
non- Jew. His current
publisher is the Viking
Press, owned by the Pearson
Group, an English firm.
Dahl, asked by the London
Jewish Chronicle to substan-
tiate his claim that all
publishers are Jewish, re-
sponded, "Why are you so
persistent? It is not a trait of
your Jewish race to be rude,
but you are certainly being
rude."
He added, "I'm an old
hand at dealing with you
buggers. No comment."
The author's wife, Felicity,
denied he was anti-Semitic.
"We have a lot of Jewish
friends," she told the
Chronicle.
Dahl was the center of con-
troversy after he compared
the Israelis to the Nazis in
an article written for the Pa-
lestinian- owned The Lit-
erary Review in 1983 follow-
ing, the invasion of Lebanon.
But Naomi Greenwood, a
university lecturer on chil-
dren's literature, said Dahl's
books are free from his per-
sonal views and there was no
reason to remove them from
the shelves.

Jewish
Cemetery
Desecrated

CD'

Bonn (JTA) — The Jewish
cemetery of Kuterdingen-
Wankheim, a town near
Tubingen, West Germany,
was desecrated last month
for the third time in a year.
The unknown vandals
daubed gravestones with
slogans such as "PLO,"
"Israel must die" and "The
wandering Jew."
Officials of this town in the
southwest part of the coun-
try said that many
gravestones had been over-
turned or otherwise damag-
ed.
The town is offering a
1,000 mark ($1,710) reward
for information leading to
the arrest of the vandals. A
total of 5,000 marks ($8,550)
has already been spent on
cleaning up, and much more
will be needed to repair a
number of gravestones.
