The Southfield High School 11th grader has found her new American friends to be very much like her friends in the Soviet Union. In excellent English she explains, "We all want the same things. We just think about them in a dif- ferent language." Although Sarah and Samira have become friends, the program makes no at- tempt to create matches. "They'll pair themselves up," Rosenzveig says. "I predict that over the summer more individual activities outside the program will occur and that certain friendships from these new relationships will last for a very long time." "The only thing that bothered me about the class in September was that at first only a handful of teens had signed up," Rosenzveig says. "I've always felt it was so im- portant to reach out to the community, and I wanted to show our young people ways of becoming involved. The Soviet teen program has rais- ed the interest of the Americans in a way we couldn't have anticipated at the onset of the class." "Our greatest challenge is to achieve an integration of the Soviet youth into the American teen culture, and we can see that beginning to happen," Rabbi Aft says.
