Lewis shuns quick

clients that by changing

equilibrium. If someone has

about what is, though he
only define what is by
describing what isn't. It isn't
keeping kosher and it isn't
following the world of the
chief rabbi of Israel, he says.
Okay, so what is it? It's
what is after all the layers of
life —everything from war to
love — are peeled away. His
search for what is is part of
what draws Stein, an engi-
neer, to the Theosophical
Society.
Founded by Western
mystics in India in 1875, the
Theosophical Society es-
pouses the unity and
interdependence of all
elements in the universe and
the right of each individual
to find his own truth. The
society presents the idea
that science, religion and
philosophy are integrated,
and is focused on finding the
nature of God, rather than
whether He exists.
An engineer, Stein was
raised in a kosher, Yiddish-
speaking home. From a
young age he began stepping
outside his Jewish world to
examine other religions.
He soon discovered
camaraderie in a socialist
circle, then found a home-
away-from home at the
Downtown Library. There,
