RISTORANTE 20% R.I.K.'s SAVE ortina `0a e offstage here. A band of toughs shoots up Haskell's produce wagon, but Haskell just moves his business into town. We glimpse Hester Street's crowded ghetto, along with other vintage photographic projections, on the wide clapboard wall in Kevin Rupnik's simple, effec- tive set, but the images of the ghetto, too quickly pass by. This is a dream come true, and Harelik's nostalgic mood is carefully maintained by Reid Johnston's pastel lighting. Director Howard Millman rarely lets things get syrupy, though there are lapses. When the teetotaling Ima decides that sharing a glass of wine for Shabbat won't harm her Christianity, the moment comes off more as "straitlac- ed woman sips booze." In the same vein, but more jarring, is Millman's directing the ac- tors to punch up the humor in the early scenes in a style like a TV sitcom. Thus Brietbarth shrugs and shoots glances to the audience to signal funny moments. Thankfully, things improve once Leah arrives, and Breitbarth grows into a creditable Haskell. Arnold captures the con- tradictions in Milton, a man who can lend a hand to so- meone he knows but cannot relate to the agonies of Euro- pean Jews in the abstract. "You don't live there anymore," he tells Haskell. "You're here. Forget about it." Jane Houdyshell's Ima is a bustling mother hen, a deep- ly caring friend and the most fully realized character of the four. Her fear at first seeing Haskell, though, doesn't seem as strong as she later describes it. The Immigrant is not, as Harelik explains in a pro- gram note, "an evening of the Borscht Belt meets 'Hee Haw.' " Nor is it a portrait of the harsh travails most im- migrants faced. But it is a reminder that no one is sit- ting in a comfortable theater today but by the sacrifices of our beloved, too seldom remembered, ancestors. ❑ Science Center Shows 'Seasons' The Detroit Science Center will show Seasons at its Omnimax theater through April 30.
