ORT To Train
10,000 Soviets

Philadelphia (JTA) — ORT
expects to train up to 10,000
Soviet Jewish immigrants in
Israel this year to improve
their chances of finding jobs,
according to Sandy Isens-
tein, chairwoman of the Ex-
ecutive Committee of the
Women's American ORT.
The emphasis will be on
updating the immigrants'
existing skills rather than
retraining for a new career,
she reported at the organiza-
tion's mid-winter National
Board Conference.
Israel Goralnik, director of
ORT Israel, observed that
the level of study and train-
ing of many Soviet engineers
or technicians is below
Israeli and Western stan-
dards. Accordingly, ORT
will upgrade their profes-
sional skills, with emphasis
on the study of computers
and high technology.
The newcomers will also
be instructed in job-search
skills, resume preparation
and job interviews.

Cedars-Sinai
Funds 'Misused'

Los Angeles (JTA) — The
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
has been accused by a con-
gressional subcommittee of
misusing federal funds
allotted to treat destitute
mentally ill patients.
Cedars-Sinai, which also
receives financial support
from the Los Angeles Jewish
Federation and numerous
private Jewish donors,
received $8 million in fed-
eral assistance between
1973 and 1981 to construct
and staff its Thalians Com-
munity Mental Health
Center.
Ron Wise, spokesman for
Cedars-Sinai, said the sub-
committee charges "came
out of the blue" and were
contrary to statements made
by the federal agency super-
vising the grant money.
Cedars-Sinai was cited as a
prime offender in a survey
conducted by the House
Government Operations
subcommittee of 575 com-
munity mental health
centers throughout the
country, according to a
report in the Los Angeles
Times.
Specifically, the Times re-
ported, the congressional
panel accused Cedars-Sinai
of turning its mental health
center into a profit-making
venture, illegally housing a
diabetes clinic at the facility
and referring poor patients
to other institutions.
