A Kabbalat Shab- bat Service for the In- termediate Sabbath of Passover will be followed by social action workshops. Kim Willett, Temple Emanu-El's sign language in- terpreter, will present the Sabbath Service in American Sign Language for the hear- ing impaired. The workshops will include AIDS, ecology and the en- vironment, economic justice, interfaith relations, the Israel Action Center, refugees and immigration, reproduction rights, and separation of church and state. Survivors To Hold Memorial Academy Haplaytah Shaarit Organization of Metropolitan Detroit — Survivors of the Nazi Genocide — in coopera- tion with the Holocaust Memorial Center, Jewish Community Council, Greater Detroit Interfaith Round Table of Christians and Jews, the Ecumenical Division of Archdiocese of Detroit and Jewish Community Center will hold the annual Holo- caust Memorial Academy 1:30 p.m. April 22 at the Maple-Drake Center. A candlelighting ceremony by the survivors of the con- centration camps and ghettos will be led by Mrs. Popowski. The candlelighters are: Rose Ferber, Irene Petrinitz, Ida Waksberg, Alex Karp, Aron Weinstein and Abe Zar- nowieski. They will be accom- panied by the children of the Holocaust survivors: Gail Of- fen Samuels, Helena Op- towski Shavell, Tali Elam Wendrow, Mark Kent, David Kraus and Joshua Krut. Ben Ari Will Speak At Beth Shalom Dinner Abbie Ben Ari, a former member of Israel's delegation to the United Nations and an authority in mass com- munications, will speak at 6 p.m. April 25 at the Con- gregation Beth Shalom New Beginnings Dinner on behalf of State of Israel Bonds. The dinner, dedicated to the Soviet aliyah to Israel, will also honor Beth Shalom members who have served as presidents of the congregation. Ben Ari has served in a number of diplomatic posts. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, he emigrated to Israel in 1952, lived on a kib- butz for eight years and then settled in a new development town in the Negev desert, where he served on the municipal council and was a planner. He is managing director of an international mass com- munications company head- quartered in Jerusalem, as well as an adviser to govern- ment ministries and institutions. JWF Women Host Lobenthal The Jewish Welfare Federa- tion Women's Division will end its Food For Thought Luncheon Series with a talk by Richard Lobenthal, 11:30 a.m. April 25 at Knoliwood Country Club in West Bloomfield. The regional director of Michigan's Anti-Defamation League, Lobenthal has held positions with ADL offices in the South and Southwest. He supervises seven ADL offices serving 11 Midwestern states.
