CHILD SMALL 12 FRIDAY, APRIL 6, 1990 skeptic. So he tried numer- ous tests to see whether codes could be found in other texts, and whether if, by removing just one letter from the Torah, the codes would remain there. But nothing worked. The codes could be found only in the Torah exactly as it is written. At that point Michaelson, a secular Jew, "put on one of these," Rabbi Mechanic said, pointing to his kippah. As remarkable as the codes themselves is that they were all written before the fact, Rabbi Mechanic said. Even those who insist the Torah was written by one or several men say it was completed thousands of years ago. Yet the codes discovered describe events that happened as recently as 1981, when Egyptian Presi- dent Anwar Sadat was murdered. Scholars now use compu- ters to check for secret codes in the Torah. To do this, they pick a certain name, such as Sadat, then ask the com- puter to find where this ap- pears in code, separated by the minimum number of letters. For example, one might be able to find the name of Sadat between 22 letters, or 120, or even 900 letters. In this sentence, it is separated by only two letters: See And DreAm Too. Scholars were specifically searching for ex- amples showing words separated by the fewest number of letters at equal intervals. The researchers did find Sadat. And they came across these words, all found at the same place, and separated by fewer numbers of letters at equal intervals than in any place in the Torah: pres- ident, shot, gunfire, murder, parade (Sadat was shot and killed during a parade), mutiny, the 8th of Tishrei (the Hebrew date on which he was murdered) and even the name of the man who organized the attack, Chalad Islambuli. Rabbi Mechanic said many such examples exist in the Torah — including the names of 35 great rabbis, found by the dates of their deaths; details about the life of one of the few kings friendly to the Jews, Franz Joseph of Austria; informa- tion about diseases and their cures; and numerous refer- ences relating to Nazi Ger- many. The hidden codes about the Nazis can be found in Bereshit 44:26-48:8, which speaks of another destruc- tion: Noah and the flood. Again, searching only for words separated by the fewest number of letters at equal intervals, researchers discovered these words and phrases: Germany, the Nazi
